Definition: Multimedia is the computer-controlled integration of multiple media elements—at least one static medium (Text, Graphics) and at least one continuous/time-dependent medium (Audio, Video, Animation)—that can be digitally captured, edited, stored, and transmitted.
Primary Classifications:

2. The 5 Core Components of Multimedia

1. Text:

• The foundational medium for conveying structured information, titles, subtitles, and menus.
• Encoding: ASCII (7/8-bit), Unicode (UTF-8 / UTF-16) supporting all global scripts.
• Typography: Serif (formal, decorative tails: Times New Roman) vs Sans-Serif (clean, modern digital displays: Arial, Inter).

2. Images & Graphics:

• Raster / Bitmap Graphics: Stored as a rectangular grid of colored pixels. Resolution-dependent (zooming causes pixelation). Formats: JPEG (lossy, photorealistic), PNG (lossless, transparency support), GIF (256 colors, simple looping animation).
• Vector Graphics: Stored as mathematical parametric equations (lines, curves, polygons, coordinates). Resolution-independent (can be enlarged infinitely without loss of sharpness). Formats: SVG, AI, EPS.

3. Audio:

Lossless Compression:
• Principle: Compresses file size by eliminating mathematical data redundancy without discarding any original information. Decompressed output is 100% bit-for-bit identical to original.
• Algorithms: Run-Length Encoding (RLE), Huffman Coding, LZW dictionary coding.
• Formats: PNG, GIF, FLAC audio, ZIP archives.
Lossy Compression:
• Principle: Eliminates imperceptible data based on human psychoacoustics and psychovisuals (discards subtle color variations and audio frequencies human senses cannot perceive).
• High compression ratios (10:1 to 50:1), but original data cannot be reconstructed perfectly.
